Presidential borehole scheme brings relief to Zvegona area

Presidential borehole scheme brings relief to Zvegona area

Story by Courage Bushe

VILLAGERS in the Zvegona area of Zvishavane have praised the government-private sector partnerships for bringing water to their doorsteps after the sinking and equipping of eight boreholes in eight villages.

The partnership between the government and the private sector continues to gain traction, as the country’s target to sink a borehole in each village remains on course.

Speaking during a food handout programme at Zvegona Business Centre this Wednesday, villagers commended the borehole sinking scheme under the mantra of leaving no one and no place behind in the national development matrix.

A villager said, “Our area does not receive enough rainfall, so with boreholes, we can also grow maize to sustain our families. This programme is a welcome development which will enable us to diversify.”

“We are grateful to our government because we used to walk long distances to get clean water. It was not easy, but now we are proud of the efforts made to ensure that the majority get clean water. This will go a long way in alleviating the plight of people in rural areas,” said another villager.

The programme has been described as key in uplifting standards of living in rural communities while reducing distances travelled to fetch water.

Zvishavane-Ngezi constituency legislator, Honourable Meki Jaravaza said, “We managed to partner with Mr Chu so that we help our communities to fight perennial water challenges and the partnership has come fruitful as it will reduce the burden of travelling long distances in search of water by our people.”

“The programme is a confirmation of the rewards and benefits of a government and private sector partnership. There is more in store for the people of Zvishavane that will play a vital role in uplifting their economic well-being,” said Tzu-Chi Zimbabwe director, Chin Chai Chu.

Under the Presidential Rural Development Programme, the government is targeting to sink 35 000 boreholes countrywide by 2025, translating to at least one borehole per village.
