National Disability Expo begins in Bindura

Story by Tapiwa Machemedze

The three-day National Disability Expo has kicked off in Bindura to empower people with disability and improve their welfare.

The expo has brought disability issues to the fore, highlighting what the government and its partners are doing to uplift people with disability.

“There are many things done by people with disability in Zimbabwe so, from today up to Friday we will be showcasing what organisations are doing for people with disability.  Government ministries and organisations will be showcasing what they do for people with disability in Zimbabwe. We do this as we drive towards Vision 2030. Gone are the days when people with disability were looked down upon. Now disability issues are being mainstreamed and at the centre of development planning,” said the Director of the Office of Special Advisor on National Disability issues in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Mr Macnon Chirinzepi.

The expo has been highly subscribed as people with disabilities play a leading role in planning and executing the event which has attracted 113 organisations.

“I am happy that our President Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa has our interests at heart leading to this expo. I am living with disability and have been involved in the planning of this event,” said one of the beneficiaries.

Another added, “We are saying there is nothing that should be done for us without us, so we have a lot of expectations from this expo as people living with disability.”

“I am an orthopedic technologist from Leonard Cheshire, we help people with disability and we are here to let people know our products can be accessed here in the country. Some in remote areas have no information so this is where we can meet them,” said one of the exhibitors.

Another added, “As an organisation, we are working together with Jairos Jiri Association, and we are saying people with disability deserve to own homes and live easily, so we are dedicated to working with them.”

The National Disability Expo, which will be officially opened this Friday is held annually, indicating government’s commitment to addressing barriers faced by persons with disability.
