Maternal health service delivery improves at UBH

Story by Yolanda Moyo

THE United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) has recorded a milestone in reducing maternal mortality after the completion of a maternal ward at the institution.

Operating with one theatre at the UBH maternity wing had become a risk for pregnant women who had emergencies.

The challenges are however a thing of the past after the government and the UNFPA intervened with a ward that has two theatres and 15 recovery beds being constructed at UBH.

ZBC News spoke to some of the women in the recovery ward who are appreciative of the improved service delivery and modern equipment that has been installed.

“This is my third time giving birth at UBH and l can see a huge change at the theatres, it is lovely and the service is ok. There is no difference with private institutions,” said a patient.

“I used to go to private hospitals and this time my friend advised me to come here and l can say that l am impressed. l gave birth to twins and l am recovering well,” noted another.

The maternal and fistula ward is also expected to reduce maternal mortality at the institution with more than 20 women going through successful surgery daily as explained by United Bulawayo Hospitals Clinical Director, Dr Harrison Rambanepasi.

“This was started in 2016 and progress stalled due to funds and last year the central government injected funds and this was completed. The hospital used to have a waiting list of mothers who wanted to give birth and this led to floor beds something that was not good for the health sector. The completion of the ward which is state-of-the-art changed all this and now our beds are empty and we are excited about this because when mothers come they are attended to,” he explained.

The expansion and upgrading of health infrastructure in the country is in line with the government’s target to ensure universal health coverage.
