Marondera Municipality disaster preparedness put to test

Story by Jerold Sasa

AT least 20 cars have been destroyed after a car-breaking workshop was gutted by fire in Marondera Thursday night, exposing Marondera Municipality’s state of disaster preparedness was exposed.

Residents of Marondera, including owners of some of the destroyed vehicles, were at the scene, with eyewitnesses narrating how it occurred and blaming the Marondera Municipality for failing to respond on time.

“We are very saddened with this incident which occurred just across the fire workshop. It shows our council is not prepared,” said one of the witnesses.

Another added, “My trailer was in there. Fortunately, I had taken my car, but this is very unfortunate.”

The owner of the workshop was not available as he is understood to have gone for counselling.

Meanwhile, the Marondera Municipality has issued a statement on the incident, saying it could not attend to the fire outbreak as their fire tender vehicle is out on routine service and had to enlist the services of Harare City Council which however could not help to save the damage.
