Story by Cordelia Ngara

TENS of thousands of students have benefitted from the government’s e-learning programme countrywide, which has seen schools receiving desktop computers, laptops, and tablets.

The Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services continues to work in close collaboration with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to improve access to information communication technologies among school children.

Harare Central Prisons Primary School is the latest to benefit from the government’s e-learning programme after the handover of 30 laptops this Friday.

“We would like to thank the Ministry of ICTs for donating 30 laptops, a printer, and a projector. It’s going to go a long way in teaching and uplifting our school children. We have about 820 students here and all those will benefit from this donation,” said Deputy Commissioner General Strategic Planning and Audit at ZPCS, Mr Shepherd Mpofu.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, Dr Beaullah Chirume reiterated the government’s position with regards to the digital economy.

“When we catch them young we will be able to attain the culture of efficiency that we need. We are already in the rural areas we are not confining ourselves to urban areas only because we think that this program is more needed in the rural areas.

“We are working with our telecommunications operators to make sure that we have connectivity in those areas so that students will be able to access online. This year we have donated over 12 000 computers and we hope that in the end, all schools will have access to ICTs,” she said

Under the Second Republic, 673 ICT-related projects including the establishment of computer laboratories and information communication centers have been completed across the country, with 147 more projects still underway.
