Government commissions Chikwizi Clinic in Chimanimani West

Story by Tamuka Charakupa

Chikwizi Clinic in Chimanimani West has been commissioned, with the development set to improve health service delivery in the area.

The Chikwizi community now boasts of a new and improved health facility, which was jointly constructed by the Chimanimani Rural District Council and a non-governmental organisation, Miracles Mission, coming as a relief to the locals following years of travelling long distances to access health services.

“We are very grateful to government for establishing a health facility for this area. We used to travel to Nyanyadzi which is 13 kilometres away or to Mutambara Mission Hospital, so this a welcome development,” a resident told the ZBC News.

“As women we suffered the most especially during pregnancy when we needed access to health services. At times mothers would deliver at home, so we appreciate this effort by government,” another said.

“We are a malaria infested community and right now we are in the middle of a cholera outbreak, so the clinic has come at the right time. This facility will go a long way in promoting health access in this community,” another noted.

Chimanimani Acting District Medical Officer, Dr Donatas Mugari spoke on the success of the Community Health Strategy meant to improve access to health services at community level.

“Under the Community Health Strategy, government has established community health posts, health centres, clinics and hospitals with the majority constructed under the devolution programme. Our aim as the Ministry of Health and Child Care is to ensure that no one travels above five kilometres to access health facilities,” he said.

The Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza, who commissioned the clinic this Wednesday highlighted the various infrastructural milestones achieved in the province with the majority anchored on the devolution policy.

“This clinic, which marks a significant milestone in the history of Chikwizi area, was constructed as a direct response to the challenges which confronted the communities in terms of accessing health care services. The Chikwizi area has accessibility challenges, in addition to villagers who had to travel long distances to access healthcare services at either Nyanyadzi Hospital or Mhakwe Clinic and hence the need to build this clinic. After the Province was struck by Cyclone Idai, particularly, Chimanimani district, the Ministry of Health and Child Care proposed that six satellite clinics had to be set up at Skyline, Kopa, Ndiadzo, Beta, Ndima, Vimba and other areas where need would arise.

“Today, you are a happy lot because you are going to have a clinic which shall be well equipped to manage health care emergencies, in addition to its being manned by highly qualified health personnel staff, outfitted with state-of-the-art medical equipment. The Second Republic has also made commendable strides in the implementation of key infrastructural development projects such as schools, health centres like we are commissioning today, roads, bridges among others. Going forward, it is anticipated that the basket of devolution projects should be enlarged so as to include construction and rehabilitation of more of health facilities such as hospitals, pharmacies, warehouses as well as borehole for provision of clean potable water among others,” he said.

Meanwhile, the clinic has a catchment area of five villages and serves over 2000 people.
