FC Platinum succumb to 3rd consecutive defeat

FC PLATINUM’S hopes of progressing to the knockout phase of the CAF champions’ league were all but quashed following a 2-nil defeat to Al Ahly at the Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo on Saturday evening.
Zimbabwe’s representatives in the CAF champions’ league FC Platinum continued to sing the blues following a 3rd consecutive loss.
The platinum miners began the game on the back foot with Wallace Magalane forced into a save as early as the fourth minute.
Al Ahly would, however, break the deadlock 4 minutes later when Ali Maloul delivered a pin point cross which was headed home by Walid Soliman in the 8th minute.
FC Platinum sought for a way back with Never Tigere’s shot kept out in the 15th minute. The first stanza produced no further goals as the hosts went to half time with a 1 goal advantage.
Al Ahly doubled their lead in the second half when Gift Bello was adjudged to have brought down Ahmed Mohamed in a tight call which saw Bello arguing he had taken the ball.
Scorer of Al Ahly’s first goal Walid Soliman would make no mistake from the spot as Al Ahly surged into a 2-nil lead after 69 minutes.
FC Platinum had an opportunity to pull a goal back but it was proving not to be their day. Al Ahly missed a glorious chance of making it 3 at the death as the Egyptian giants settled for a 2 nil victory.
Defeat left FC Platinum bottom of group B with no points accumulated while victory took Al Ahly’s points tally to 6 from 3 games.
Zimbabwe’s reigning champions remain group B’s whipping boys with hopes of progressing to the knockout phase of the champions league has all but ended with 3 games still to play.
