Government has stepped up efforts to eliminate corruption in Covid-19 certification at all ports of entry by adopting technology which uses bar codes for verification.
Speaking to ZBC News this Saturday, Ministry of Health and Child Care spokesperson Mr Donald Mujiri said they have shifting to QR or Bar Code scanning of certificates which leaves no room for forgery of results.
“This is a public private partnership aimed at eradicating fake Covid-19 certificates at all ports of entry. We are working with laboratories to ensure that they comply with this initiative so that we adopt technology which leaves no room for forgery.”
At one of the laboratories in Harare which is using the system, ZBC News was shown the process from testing to generating the QR codes of the Covid-19 results.
“ When we are done with testing we input all the results and information of the patient into the system including their photo and at the ports of entry, the code is scanned and all the details will come out. ”
SADC Covid testing representative Mr Martin Gondo says the initiative is a public private partnership arrangement being spearheaded by Zimbabweans who have taken the system to other SADC countries.
“We are working in more than three SADC countries and we decided to come up with this innovation on the back of corruption where there was an influx of fake results.”
The move is likely to be an end game for unscrupulous and rogue laboratories, some of whom have appeared in court for cashing in on fake Covid-19 certificates.
The new Covid-19 testing verification initiative will further strengthen Government’s Covid-19 containment efforts.
