Establishment of community radio stations a priority: Mutsvangwa

INFORMATION, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Senator Monica Mutsvangwa has said the establishment of more community radio stations is one of the major priorities of the government.
Addressing stakeholders at a sensitisation meeting in Shamva where a Chewa community radio station will be set up, Mutsvangwa said the government is on a drive to grow the broadcasting industry in Zimbabwe through establishing more community radio stations to give a voice to local communities.
“Now is the time to grow the broadcasting industry in Zimbabwe through working together with local communities. Community radio stations are a vehicle for the development and establishment of these radio stations helps preserve the language, culture and identity of the local people,” said Mutsvanga.
The sentiments come at a time government is on a community radio stations programme which will see marginalised communities get improved access to information and having their voices heard.
The thrust of Government in the Second Republic is based on empowerment coming through devolution. So, the drivers of development are communities and the Government supports the drive towards having community radio stations in different communities so that the community radio stations drive development in those communities in a devolved way.
