End of the road for armed robbery suspects targeting truck drivers

By Peter Chivhima

Two suspected armed robbers who were targeting truck drivers transporting fuel in and around Harare, have appeared in court.

Circumstances are that on the 2nd of this month the duo of Donald Dube and Innocent Masiya together with their accomplices, Munyaradzi Chimbarami who is already in custody and the other one only identified as T-one and still at large, robbed Gershem Takawira of a truck which was loaded with 40 000 litres of petrol.

The court heard that two of the accused persons, who were clad in police uniforms, accused the truck driver of evading a road block, before proceeding to dump the complainant somewhere in Epworth.

The duo was arrested after police arrested another suspect, Munyaradzi Chimbarami of Waterfalls suburb in Harare, where they recovered the stolen truck trailer and US$120 000 and 24 litres of petrol believed to have been acquired through these shenanigans.

The court further heard that upon his arrest, Chimbarami led the detectives to another hiding place where 30 000 litres of petrol was recovered before he implicated Dube and Masiya.

In their initial court appearance this Wednesday, the two were not asked to plead and were remanded in custody to the 22nd of this month.

In another court case, the judgement on the criminal abuse of office case involving suspended Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner Erasmus Makodza will now be handed down on the 18th of next month following its deferment this Wednesday after the court indicated that the judgement is not ready.
