HIGHER and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Minister Professor Amon Murwira has urged African countries to embrace innovation to ensure the 2030 Agenda for Africa is attained.
He made the remarks at the ongoing Sixth (2020) session of the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD 6) being held under the theme “2020-2030: A Decade to Deliver a Transformed and Prosperous Africa through the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063”. It will undertake a review of all the 17 SDGs and corresponding goals of Agenda 2063,
The Minister called upon regional countries to accelerate actions to enable science and innovation to deliver aspirations under Agenda 2063.
“We believe that science, technology, and innovation within the heritage-based education 5.0 framework and Pipeline will move Africa forward,” he said.
Child President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Mukudzeiishe Madzivire said as the youth they stand ready to take a leading role in ensuring a technology-led economic transformation.
“We would like to see the government providing support and investing in a youth-led technological revolution. As a youth, we are ready to play a part in the quest to achieve technology-led economic growth,” he said
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Regional Director and Representative Professor Hubert Gijzen highlighted the key role science is set to play in increasing productivity and ensuring industrialisation of the continent.
“We fully appreciate the central role that science and technology are set to play in the transformation of regional economies and there is a need for regional countries to embrace research and innovation,” said Professor Gijzen.
The 2020 ARFSD is intended to be an action-oriented Forum for stakeholders to explore, gain insight into, share and agree on sets of concrete and workable actions that will enable the African countries to achieve set targets within the set time. All the 17 SDGs will be under the spotlight at the 2020 Forum.
