Elderly inmates at Chikurubi Maximum Prison have appealed for presidential pardon to ease the burden on the correctional services.
The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services is taking care of more than 360 elderly inmates between the ages of 70 and 98 across the country.
50 of them housed at Chikurubi Maximum Prison where they are serving sentences for crimes such as rape, murder and stock theft.
“We are appealing to the President to release us so that we can go home to be with our families. We have learnt our lesson and we need forgiveness. We will die in prison if we are not released,” they said.
However, if they are to be released society might not accept them hence the need to advocate for alternative sentences to be meted on the elderly.
