Eight relatives in the dock over grandfather’s murder

Eight family members from Village 20, Chief Ziki area in Bikita have been charged with the murder of their 77-year old grandfather, whom they accused of witchcraft.

Ephraim Tinashe Mungareka, Faith Gumbo, Ratidzo Ndambakuwa, Makazivei Zvihari, Eudiborm Mungareka, Tellmore Mungareka, Robert Mungareka and Garikai Mungareka made their initial appearance before Masvingo High Court Judge, Justice Garainesu Mawadze this Tuesday facing murder charges.

Prosecutor, Mukai Mutumhe told the court that on the 21st of June 2019, the accused persons approached their now deceased grandfather, Ephraim Hlozo Mungareka, accusing him of witchcraft and allegedly causing the death of one, Clive Mungareka.

The court heard that the accused took turns to assault their grandfather all over his body, using open hands, leather whips and an electric cable in front of the whole village for more than six hours.

The deceased was then reportedly taken home by her daughter and was found dead two days later.

The post mortem report which was produced in court revealed that the deceased died due to abdominal bleeding, blunt trauma and haemorrhagic shock.
