The Chinhoyi University of Technology will this Friday become the first state university to hold a virtual graduation ceremony in compliance with COVID- 19 precautionary measures.
ZBC TV has partnered the Chinhoyi University of Technology to broadcast live its maiden virtual graduation ceremony on Friday and restore treasured moments that have been stolen away by the COVID- 19 global pandemic.
The 2 292 graduands, who are being encouraged to wear their academic regalia and follow proceedings in the comfort of their homes, will have their names scroll on national television.
CUT Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Dr Musekiwa Tapera said only PhD, Master of Philosophy and undergraduates with distinctions will physically attend the ceremony under strict COVID-19 precautions.
“Those who are going to attend physically are those in the PhD, Mphil and first-class category our stakeholder can participate virtually from home we are going to have a ZTV live coverage.”
Aspiring graduands expressed mixed feelings over the institution’s sensitivity to the global pandemic at the expense of their celebrations.
“For me, it is dream shattered, I was dreaming of wearing my high heels only to be told you are graduating online,” said one graduand.
“This is a good idea because these are recommendations from WHO, it will be a sad memory to contract COVID-19 on your graduation day.”
The envisaged short ceremony will also be uploaded on the university’s various digital platforms as the country displays its digital maturity and capability to adapt to the new normal.
The State University’s Chancellor, President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to preside over the occasion.
