Man killed over gold claim

Story by Fungai Jachi, Courts Reporter

A violent confrontation over a gold claim between two rival groups ended tragically after one of them was stabbed to death.

24-year-old Tatenda Chidavaenzi was not asked to plead when he appeared in court for allegedly killing a colleague.

It is the State’s case that Chidavaenzi was involved in an argument with the now-deceased before stabbing him several times in the chest, leading to his death.

Meanwhile, 68-year-old Sekayi Wade who allegedly defrauded her business partner of over US$200 000 has appeared in court facing charges of fraud.

Wade who allegedly misappropriated funds meant for a business project has been released on ZW$500 000 bail.

In another case, the High Court has dismissed former Chitungwiza Chamber Secretary Priscilla Vengesai’s application in which she is challenging her sentence.

Vengesai, who was convicted and sentenced to an effective 15-month jail term for attempting to bribe a High Court judge handling a civil case in which she had an interest had applied for the sentence to be revoked.

The High Court made it clear that Vengesai should be grateful that her sentence was lenient as corruption is a serious offence.
