PUBLIC health matters such as the current COVID-19 pandemic have been cited as a state security concern for any country.
The Chief Co-ordinator of the National Response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Dr. Agnes Mahomva addressed students at the Zimbabwe National Defence University in Harare this Monday, where public health matters came under the spotlight.
Dr. Mahomva said public health is an essential component of national security, highlighting how pandemics such as HIV and COVID-19 have impacted on the peace and security of countries worldwide.
“Health security is an important security issue. Covid-19 is now a security threat to more than 200 countries. This has resulted in over a hundred million people malnourished and in need of food globally. It may indirectly cause food insecurity and economic crisis. Covid-19 can cause the security of a nation to be compromised. However the Health Ministry has put in place strategies to have an effective response to COVID-19,” she said.
Government through the Ministry of Health and Child Care has put in place strategies to effectively respond to COVID-19, in areas of surveillance, early detection, and testing, among others.
