COURT: Mamombe trial deferred to next month; Sikhala in bail bid

MDC Alliance legislator Joana Mamombe and two party activists will now stand trial next month, a Harare magistrate ruled Wednesday.

The opposition trio face charges of lying to the police and faking abduction and will stand trial on September 15, ruled magistrate Trynos Utahwashe.

This was after defence attorney Aleck Muchadehama told court that prosecutors had yet to furnish the trio with State papers.

The activists were arrested in May this year after claiming they were abducted by state agents, tortured and later dumped at Muchapondwa Business Centre in Bindura.

However, police say they were never abducted, but allegedly stage-managed the kidnapping.

Further charges are that during the time of the alleged kidnapping, all three were at Belgravia Shopping Centre in Harare.

The State alleges that they were seen at around 4.45pm in a Mercedes Benz, which was being driven by Mamombe.

Meanwhile, MDC Alliance national vice chairperson Job Sikhala is expected to make his bail application this Wednesday after a bid for refusal of remand was successfully opposed by the state.

Sikhala, who had been in hiding before being arrested last week, is charged with inciting public violence ahead of the failed July 31 opposition protests.
