Corruption scandal rocks Gweru city council

HEADS are set to roll at the Gweru City Council following a fresh corruption scandal involving over a million dollars unearthed by an audit.
According to a leaked council audit report dated January 27, 2020, Gweru City officials made some questionable procurement decisions that have prejudiced the City of Progress in excess of millions of Zimbabwean dollars in botched procurement deals.
The report indicates that the council lost close to 93 000 United States dollars in purchasing a second hand back-hoe loader which was purported to be new.
The report further indicates that council lost close to seven thousand dollars in repairing the machinery well before the two year guarantee period had even lapsed.
The report also points that the local authority paid close to $10 thousand United States dollars to Afripool for servicing of two water pumps at Gwenhoro Dam but proper works were never done.
The works were eventually done after government advanced a loan to the council.
Gweru Acting Town Clerk, Vakayi Chikwekwe is also said to be in hot soup for illegally acquiring thousands of litres of fuel in services which were never fulfilled.
Gweru Mayor, Councillor Josiah Makombe, who made the state of the city address this Tuesday, confirmed the audit report and said there will be no sacred cows in dealing with the culprits.
“We are also making sure that once this report is ready, we will take it to ZACC and the police to do some further investigations and am sure that we all read the service report which unearthed this issue of vehicle loader on something to do with procurement where someone procured a second hand vehicle but paid for a brand new one something which did not give value to the people and we ended up paying a lot of money,” said Councillor Makombe.
Gweru Town Clerk, Elizabeth Gwatipedza is already on suspension over a slew of allegations, including incompetence and corruption and is said to have been presiding over much of the botched deals.
