Corruption-fingered Mberengwa RDC officials suspended

Mberengwa Rural District Council has suspended its executives fingered in corruption allegations involving illegal foreign currency trading on the parallel market.

A full council meeting held at the local authority’s Mataga offices on Friday resolved to suspend Chief Executive Officer Thompson Maeresera and treasurer Joyce gumbo for allegedly trading in foreign currency on the parallel market using the local authority’s funds.

Alongside an accounts clerk, the two were picked by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) and managed to secure bail.

However, it seems their problems are far from being over as the local authority has resolved to suspend them and appoint Percy Mwedzi as acting chief executive officer.

It is being alleged that during the period January 2020 to December 2021, the two connived not to bank forex both United States dollars and South African Rands received from rate payers and illegally exchanged US$150 000 with companies in Harare, which would in turn transfer Zimbabwean dollars into Mberengwa Rural District Council ZB and Agribank accounts.

The offence was discovered around September 2021 through an internal audit process.
