Coronavirus :SA universities , colleges close today

SOUTH Africa Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Dr Blade Nzimande said all public institutions of higher learning will go on early recess as of today until the 15th of next month.
About 2 comma 5 million students at universities and TVET colleges across the country will be affected.
The decision will, however, not affect postgraduate students.
“Of course some of the institutional activities will continue during this period such as postgraduate and research work. In other words, it’s not a shut down its an early recess which in the main means the suspension of academic activity and lecturers mainly for undergraduate and TVET colleges of course for diploma and certificate programs,” said Nzimande addressing the media in Pretoria.
Dr Nzimande said this after meeting with stakeholders including labour unions, student representatives and representatives from various universities, in Pretoria, yesterday.
The closures take effect from this Wednesday, in line with steps taken by the department of basic education to close schools.
He appealed to private institutions of higher learning to also suspend academic activities in the wake of the Covid -19 pandemic.
