JONATHAN Chinyoka and Olivia Chitate powered to glory in the men and women’s sections of the 42 kilometre Old Mutual Marathon held in Harare on Sunday.
The 2020 edition of the Old Mutual marathon attracted a huge field of runners with athletes competing in the 5, 10 and 42-kilometre categories.
In the prestigious 42 kilometres, event Jonathan Chinyoka claimed pole position after registering a personal best time of 2 hours 19 minutes, finishing ahead of Prosper Mutwira.
Chinyoka was excited to claim victory, with second-placed Mutwira pleased with his performance.
“I am pleased with how things turned out because this is a personal best time for me. I am now hoping that with adequate support I will be able to find sponsors that help me prepare for the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon races because they are very important in terms of registering an Olympic qualifying time,” said Chinyoka
“It was a tough race I think credit should go to Jonathan for the good run. I think I did well and with my performance, I think I will be able to hold my own at the CBZ Marathon. I can also safely say I am in good form seeing that the two oceans is also close by,” Mutwira said
Veteran, Olivia Chitate who outfoxed other runners in the gruelling 42-kilometre race was surprised to claim pole position in a race she felt it was not her best in terms of preparations.
Chitate said, “To be quite honest with you I was not expecting to win this race. I did not prepare well for it, my training was not the best but I am delighted to have performed the way that I did today given my goal of qualifying for the Olympics.’
Rudo Mhondera was first in the female section of the 21-kilometre race, while in the male category of the half marathon, Conscious Hwenjere claimed pole position.
The Old Mutual Marathon is one of the biggest long-distance races on the domestic athletics calendar and plays a key role in preparing athletes for other prestigious international competitions such as the Two Oceans and comrades marathon.
