The Zimbabwe Sevens Rugby team, the Cheetahs remain on course to qualify for the Olympics after thumping Mexico in their opening match of the Olympic Repechage tournament in Monaco, France yesterday.
The Cheetahs got off to a perfect start with three tries in their Pool A opener to record an impressive 21-0 victory against Mexico as the World Rugby Sevens Repechage got underway at Stade Louis II.
Following a cagey opening four minutes, Zimbabwe’s Godfrey Magaramombe strode onto a pass from Ryan Musumhi and through a gap in the Mexican defence to score the first try of the match.
With around two-and-a-half minutes remaining Magaramombe turned provider as he gave a scoring pass to Sam Phiri on the right wing.
There was still time for Munopa Muneta to put some gloss on the win with a third try.
To be back on the field in a place like this is amazing,Playing these teams is the best and we’re all fighting for the last place , we have a young team and the good thing is they don’t fear anyone so we are excited about what lies ahead, said Muneta.
The youthful Cheetahs take on Samoa this evening before battling Tonga in their final group game this Sunday.
Zimbabwe need to win this tournament to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
