The Zimbabwe national Sevens Rugby team, the Cheetahs have failed to qualify for the Olympics after losing two group matches in Monaco, France today.

After impressing in the first match of the World Rugby Sevens Repechage tournament, much was expected from the youthful Cheetahs side but they failed the test against two quality opponents.

The Cheetahs fell 31-10 to Ireland early this Saturday morning and it went from bad to worse following a 33-7 defeat in their last match of the day against Pacific giants Samoa.

While the margins maybe somewhat similar, the second defeat virtually sealed Zimbabwe’s fate as the Olympic dream was over.

Although the Cheetahs still have another group game this Sunday against Tonga they will be playing only for pride as a win will not be good enough for Zimbabwe to progress to the next round of the Qualifiers.

Meanwhile, team Zimbabwe remained in the International Tennis Federation, EuroAfrica Zone group three even though they lost 2-1 to Kosovo in the positional playoff match at the Billie Jean cup in Lithuania this Saturday.

15 year olds Tadiwanashe Mauchi and Tanyaradzwa Midzi lost their singles matches before they combined to win the doubles.

Team Zimbabwe was looking ahead to the future with the two youngsters on a learning expedition playing alongside seasoned Valeria Bhunu.
