Police have busted a potential covid-19 hotspot after raiding an illegal shebeen in Bulawayo’s Magwegwe suburb on Wednesday.
Zimbabwe Republic Police Officer Commanding Nkulumane District, Chief Superintendent Sheritah Bizeki Nyoka told ZBC News that they are out in full force to enforce lockdown measures.
“We received a tip off from the public after Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube had just finished his programme on the local radio station. Acting on the tip off, Magwegwe police officers raided house Number 1914 New Magwegwe and confiscated 84 cases of Indlovu, 82 cases of Chibuku, seven crates of castle lite and seven crates of black label.
“Shebeens are hot spots for spreading covid-19 and we would want to warn shebeen operators that the police are thawing these illegal drinking spots,” said Chief Supt Nyoka.
The raid comes just days after music promoter, DJ Fantan, was arrested together with his two colleagues after they convened an illegal music bash on New Year’s Eve in Mbare, Harare. The tri has since been sentenced to an effective six-month jail sentence.
