World Bank regional VP in Zimbabwe

Story by Stanley James, Business Editor

World Bank Regional Vice President (VP) for Eastern and Southern Africa, Dr Victoria Kwakwa has given credit to the government of Zimbabwe for its commitment to maintaining economic growth despite internal and external shocks.

Dr Victoria Kwakwa, who arrived in Zimbabwe this Thursday for a four-day visit where she is scheduled to attend the 56th Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development in Victoria Falls, says the Bretton Woods institution is strengthening partnerships with Zimbabwe.

Noting that Zimbabwe like any other global economy has not been spared from shocks such as weak international commodity prices, and geopolitical tensions including climate change, Dr Kwakwa commended the government for its policies to ensure that the economy continues to maintain a growth trajectory.

“My visit is centred on engagements with the government of Zimbabwe on several economic issues, I will use it as a platform to also interact with the African Ministers of Finance in Victoria Falls, basically as the World Bank, we continue to be in touch with Zimbabwe on a number of issues with the resilience of the economy during the past few years bearing testimony of strides being achieved by the government in as far as economic reforms are concerned.”

The World Bank Regional VP is also expected to use the ongoing conference of African Ministers as a platform to provide solutions to socio-economic challenges affecting the continent.

During her visit, Dr Kwakwa is also expected to hold meetings with government officials, the private sector, young entrepreneurs and women among others.

The World Bank is among global lenders that have endorsed economic reforms in the country with expectations that the economy will grow by 3.5% this year.
