The Bulawayo community has mourned football legend Ernest “Maphepha” Sibanda, describing him as an administrator par excellence.

The death of the sports personality, whose talent took him beyond football has left not just the City of Bulawayo poorer but the nation at large given his dedication as an administrator and passion for sport.

The loss was summed up by Highlanders fans who concur that Sibanda was instrumental in turning around the fortunes of the club when he was chairman adding that he should be considered for hero status given his involvement in the national team and other sport codes.

Maphepha was a good administrator he pushed the game of football to another level during his time as Manager and Chairman of Bosso.

It is so sad that he is gone because we were considering his candidature as chairman for Bosso given his commitment to the game. He has left a big void in the sports fraternity as he was also involved in Darts.

Highlanders Communications and Media Officer, Ronald Moyo said the club is deeply touched by the loss of a seasoned member of the Bosso family.

We as Highlanders feel the pain of losing one of our own Maphepha was a big part of the club it’s a sad loss that can’t be replaced so we are with the family as they mourn his passing on,he said.

Bulawayo Mayor Councillor Solomon Mguni added his voice saying while the city has given Sibanda a civic honour for him to be buried at Lady Stanley cemetery, he is aware of the strong representation that he be accorded hero status.

We are so sorry for the loss and as a city we have given him the respect such that he can be buried at Lady Stanley which is a highly regarded, but yes there are some moves to have him declared a hero and we support that as well and we will wait to see if government agrees to that, said Mguni.

The death of Sibanda comes at a time the nation is still mourning the passing on of another legend, former Caps United captain Joe Mugabe.
