Basketball enthusiasts will have to keep their fingers crossed as the Covid 19 pandemic threatens this year’s 3 x 3 tournament slated for Bulawayo in December.

With the Bulawayo City Council having granted the use of the City Hall car park as the venue, organisers are going ahead with their plans despite the temporary closure of borders as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic

The country is set to host the fourth edition of the Young Lions South U18 3 x 3 basketball tournament in December with 13 countries expected to take part.

Basketball Union of Zimbabwe President Joe Mujuru, remains confident that the event will take place, despite the lockdown.

“Look, the covid situation is affecting everybody. We are also expectant and hoping that we will start competing soon, not just as Zimbabwe but in the region,” he says.

“As you can imagine, even if we start competing in Zimbabwe if we have not opened up in the region it then affects our visitors. So we are hoping that by at least September or October or November the latest all affected countries that are looking forward to attending are given the green light to start competing at home so that they satisfy their qualification criteria as well as being able to travel in a safe environment come December for the competition.”

The first three editions of the competition were held in Botswana and Zimbabwean teams have been crowned champions twice, in both the men and women’s categories.

3 x 3 basketball is fast becoming a huge event especially after it was added to the list of Olympic sports.
