SABCNews – Newly-elected Johannesburg Executive Mayor Jolidee Matongo is no more. The executive mayor of Johannesburg passed away this evening in car accident.
Matongo was part of an ANC elections program in Soweto encouraging residents to go and register to vote.
Circumstances around the accident that the mayor was involved in are not yet clear.
Meanwhile, Soweto residents have urged ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently restore electricity in some parts of the township. The president was leading the governing party’s campaign trail in the areas.
At the Nomzamo informal settlement, residents have been without electricity for over two years while in areas like Chiawelo and Naledi some residents have been in the dark for over two months. They say power outage in the township is also compounded by blown up substations and cable theft.
Ramaphosa says it was worth it to hear people’s frustrations and promised Eskom will soon address the problem.
