Bogus cop faces extortion charges

A Bindura man masquerading as a Criminal Investigation Detective (CID) has appeared in court on allegations of extorting 3 000 dollars from a local woman he accused of dealing in marijuana.
Jonathan Nyamayaro, aged 39, was charged with impersonation and extortion when he appeared in court this Wednesday.
Prosecutor Edward Katsvairo told the court that sometime in July last year, the accused together with two unidentified men approached the complainant, Mercy Ngirazi at her homestead where they accused her and her brother of selling marijuana.
Allegations are that Nyamayaro, who represented himself as a police detective, handcuffed the complainant’s nephew, demanding to be paid in cash as price for his freedom.
After receiving the money via Ecocash and cash, it is alleged the accused searched inside the complainant’s house and came across a slaughtered heifer.
Nyamayaro allegedly demanded more money, accusing the complainant of slaughtering the heifer without clearance.
The matter was reported to the police, who initiated investigations that led to Nyamayaro’s arrest.
Nyamayaro has been remanded in custody and awaits judgement on Friday.
