AUSC REG 5: Zim collects nine more medals

ZIMBABWE scooped a further nine medals this Wednesday at the African Union Sports Council Region Five Youth Games in Maseru, Lesotho to take the country’s medal haul to 30.
She is made of gold and her name is Donata Katai. After collecting four gold medals on Tuesday, she simply made it a perfect five after getting another gold in her favoured race, the 200m backstroke.
The 17 year old competed in five individual races and walked away with five golds leading from the front of a very successful swimming team.
The whole team managed to collect six medals this Wednesday, one gold, two silver and three bronze, meaning that all in all the aquatics team has garnered 26 medals.
After the swimming competitions this morning, the day became even better with Tinotenda Kufandirori winning a bronze medal in the Taekwondo under 55 kgs category.
Boxer, Wisdom Dube was not to be left behind and he scooped another bronze medal in the flyweight category.
The tennis doubles duo of Bennedict Badza and Lyle Zaloumis would then scoop a silver medal after they lost to team South Africa.
‘I am very happy with the performance of this team, in the COVID-19 era managing to compete is enormous more so doing this well, it is a very commendable performance we need to continue playing and find ways of living with it,” said Sport Minister, Kirsty Coventry.
Zimbabwe will compete in the mixed doubles this Thursday looking to add to the medals tally.
