African Union chairperson and Senegalese President Macky Sall has added his voice to calls for the removal of illegal economic sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the United States and its Western allies.

The sanctions issue took centre stage at the 77th United Nations General Assembly currently underway in New York, United States.

Addressing the UN General Assembly, African Union chairperson Macky Sall called for the removal of the illegal sanctions saying they are an injustice against the people of Zimbabwe.

“The AU once again calls for the lifting of foreign sanctions against Zimbabwe. These harsh measures continue to be an injustice against an entire people and aggravate their suffering in these times of deep crisis,” he said.

The call for the removal of the illegal embargo comes just a few days after South African President Cyril Ramaphosa engaged his United States counterpart Joe Biden on the sanctions which have been in place for more than two decades.

President Ramaphosa did not mince his words telling Biden that the illegal embargo has affected not only Zimbabwe, but the entire SADC region which has set aside the 25th of October as the SADC Anti-Sanctions Day.
