Veteran artist condemns drug abuse

Story by Grace Sibanda

ONE of the godfathers of rhumba music in Bulawayo, Obediah Matulana has added his voice on the dangers of drug and substance abuse that has affected the country’s youths.

Having worked with the likes of Oliver Mtukudzi, Solomon Skuza and Leonard Dembo, Matulana has learnt a lot about how to lead a life that has a positive impact on others and the profession.

Matulana notes with concern how in contrast to the well-groomed and upright crop of yesteryear musicians, drug and substance abuse has led to the downfall of young artists.

“Nowadays young artists are misusing drugs, which is why there is an increase in deaths. I encourage artists to desist from using drugs for the sake of longevity. I have been in the music scene for more than 30 years and I am enjoying the benefits of respecting myself and my music. Taking care of one’s self is important if our artists want to still be here 30 years from now,” he said.

Having started his musical journey in 1988, Matulana is moving with the times and riding on technology to take his music beyond the country`s borders.

He said, “I have had the pleasure of being a musician for a long time, since 1988 and I have worked with several artists who have helped to grow my brand. During our time we did not have most of these technological privileges as we used sponsors mostly to promote our music and we distributed the CDs ourselves, but nowadays there is YouTube and many organisers ready to push music for young artists.”

The veteran rhumba artist is set to release his 31st album next month.
