THE Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) says it will continue to serve and foster positive community relations in promoting peace and economic development in the country.
This was said at the handover-takeover ceremony of the Commanding Office held at William Ndangana 3.3 Reserve Force Battalion in Chipinge this Tuesday.
Speaking to ZBC News on the sidelines of the handover-takeover parade, Commander 3 Infrantry Brigade, Brig-General George Chitsva said the army has always played a central role in fostering community development in line with the country’s vision of becoming an upper middle income economy by the year 2030.
“The Zimbabwe National Army has always been involved in community development, carrying out quite a number of projects. Remember during the Cyclone Idai disaster we opened roads, provided relief assistance among other projects but overally we remain committed to serving our community,” he said.
During the handover-takeover, a senior appointment was made as Lieutenant-Colonel Chaikaipa Mukuna took over from Lieutenant-Colonel Whatmore Ziweni as the new Commanding Officer of the battalion.
Outgoing Commanding Officer Lieutenant-Colonel Ziweni thanked the Chipinge community and stakeholders for rendering support to the military in carrying out its mandate in the district.
“I would like to thank the Chipinge community and all the force for their support during my tenure as Commanding Officer. I sincerely hope you will render the same support to the incoming Commanding Officer,” said Colonel Ziweni.
ZNA has been playing a leading role during the Cyclone Idai period where they were the first to offer relief services to affected communities.
