Alrosa hands over Sputnik V vaccines to President Mnangagwa

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has received 25 thousand doses of the Sputnik V Vaccine from a Russian diamond company, Alrosa.

The donation coincided with the Russian National Day and Cde Mnangagwa thanked his counterpart President Vladimir Putin and the people of Russia for the goodwill that dates back to the liberation struggle.

Russian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Nicholi Krasilnikov and Alrosa Head of Africa and Deputy Chief Executive Officer Vladimir Marchenko spoke of the corporate responsibilities of Russian companies and how Zimbabwe has done extremely well in fighting COVID_-19.

The Sputnik V vaccine, which also bears the name Gam-COVID-Vac, currently has authorization for use in 68  countries.

The Gamaleya National Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Moscow, Russia, developed the vaccine.

Sputnik V is a viral vector vaccine designed to produce lasting immunity against COVID-19. According to an interim analysis of phase 3 clinical trial data published in The Lancet, the vaccine’s efficacy  is 91.6% .

The Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine uses two harmless viruses that deliver the genetic code for human cells to make a protein from the new coronavirus. This trains the immune system to fight against future infections with the new coronavirus.

As of the 10 of June 2021, Zimbabwe stands at thirty-nine thousand 496 cases of COVID-19, one thousand 626 deaths and thirty-six thousand 940 recoveries.

64 new cases and 4 deaths were recorded on the 10th of June alone with 690 452 people having received first COVID-19 vaccination doses while 399 054 people received a full dose.
