Zim makes strides in boosting agriculture budget allocation

Story by Tendai Munengwa

THE Government says significant progress has been made towards achieving the 10 percent national budget allocation towards agriculture transformation in fulfillment of the Malabo Declaration of 2014 which focuses on food security among other objectives.

The Centre for Coordination of Agriculture Research and Development Southern Africa (CCARDESA) is hosting a four-day engagement in Zimbabwe to take stock of how far SADC countries have gone in implementing the Malabo Declaration of 2014.

The declaration calls for African governments to allocate 10 percent of their national budget to the agriculture sector.

“As Zimbabwe we have made great strides to transform our agriculture, concerted efforts are being made to fulfill the 10 percent, had it not been for drought this season we were on track to end hunger at household level, through our climate proof Pfumvudza/Intwasa,” said Permanent Secretary in the ministry of Lands, Agric, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Professor Obert Jiri.

According CCADESA Secretariat, only two African countries Rwanda and Ghana have fulfilled the Malabo Declaration, while the rest are struggling due lack of funding.

“Data collection and compilation is the most challenging area, most countries have no funding for that and like in our SADC region the Elnino Drought was foretold but we were found wanting because of data dissemination,” said SADC secretariat Dr Baitsi Posidi.

The engagement comes at time the Second Republic has adopted the Rural Development 8.0 Model which promotes the Pfumvudza/Intwasa farming model targeting 3.5 million households and a commitment to put a 350 000 hectares under irrigation to ensure sustainable food security.
