Revitalised Neta Irrigation scheme relief to community

Story by Courage Bushe

THE Second Republic’s rural industrialisation programme continues to gain traction following the revitalisation of the 45-hectare Neta Irrigation scheme in Mberengwa.

The impact of climate change has seen the government and its partners working hand-in-glove to ensure food security through revitalising irrigation schemes in line with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).

Neta Irrigation Scheme in Mberengwa District is one such project which has been brought back to life having been operating at below 30% after water pipes and an electricity transformer were stolen in 2021.

The timely intervention has given farmers renewed vigour with more than 10 hectares of winter wheat having been planted.

“We want to thank our government and its development partners for remembering us Mberengwa people from Neta village. We faced a lot of challenges in the past year when our irrigation wasn’t working well.”

“We as youths are very happy with this initiative because it will help us economically and it will deter us from venturing into drugs. This is a good gesture from our leadership we are very happy,” noted some of the villagers who spoke to ZBC News.

Mberengwa District Agronomist Robert Tazivei weighed in saying the scheme has stirred up economic activity in the area.

“They are doing well under the block system. This is a commendable initiative because it helps them [farmers] to work as a unity and realise huge profits. If they continue using this method, I can safely say that they will be empowered economically. As the government we will continue working with them and assist them with expertise,” said Tazivei.

Mberengwa district which has seven irrigation schemes and two large community gardens is targeting at least 230 hectares of wheat this winter season.
