Mat South steps up adoption of Pfumvudza/Intwasa

Story by Providence Maraneli

TRADITIONAL leaders in Bulilima District are leading the way in the climate-proof Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme as the country targets food self-sufficiency from the household level.

When one is said to be vulnerable in a rural community, the burden to feed and clothe them lies with traditional leaders.

Chiefs and village heads are therefore expected to have an abundant supply of all essentials.

This might be the reason why traditional leaders in Bulilima District are spearheading the climate-proof Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme.

“I have already dug holes for my three plots and the message to my village is simple, we all have to have at least 3 plots at each homestead,” said a village head.

Another village head said, “All those who did not plant using Pfumvudza last year are struggling so this is the way to go.”

“The rains have made it easier for me to continue and I am encouraging people to do the same,” added another.

“As the chief of this area, I am leading in the holing, and I have already started preparation. This is the only way we can be food secure,” said Chief Manguba.

With the majority of Matabeleland South falling in the dry regions 4 and 5, preparations for the summer cropping season are biased towards traditional grains.

Matabeleland South Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Dr Evelyn Ndlovu said, “We need to make sure that we are food secure, without food security there is no vision 2030 to talk about. We have to deliver, we have no option but to deliver.”

The climate-proof Pfumvudza/Intwasa farming concept is one of the strategies being implemented by the government in the face of the predicted lean rainfall season.
