Government launches inputs scheme for sorghum production

Story by Peter Chivhima

THE government has accelerated efforts to promote the production of traditional grains, with an inputs distribution facility having been launched for sorghum.

In its quest to sustain the country’s food security in the wake of the predicted El Nino, the government has moved in to avail more sorghum inputs to farmers wishing to plant the traditional grain during the 2023/24 summer cropping season.

This was revealed by the Acting Chief Director of Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services (ARDAS) in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Mr Stancilae Tapererwa in an interview with the ZBC News this Friday.

“Government through ARDAS is providing inputs such as fertilisers on a cost recovery basis at the point of sale at GMB depots. Farmers will be given inputs according to the hectares they want. Farmers who are willing to venture into this program should have planted by the 10th of January next year.”

Under the new programme, farmers are expected to sign joint ventures with ARDA.

“Under this programme, farmers should sign joint ventures with ARDA so that they can access the inputs easily. Inputs are available at GMB depots across the country,” said Mr Tapererwa.

The government is rolling out several initiatives such as the construction of dams to promote irrigation and distribution of inputs under the Pfumvudza/Intwasa programme in a bid to make sure that the country is food-sufficient.
