Glendale community benefits from Presidential Fisheries Programme

Story by Tapiwa Machemedze

THE tranche of 5 000 Nile tilapia fish breeders donated to residents of Ward 18 in the Glendale area of Mazowe district is expected to generate income for the local community under the Presidential Fisheries Programme, which seeks to empower rural communities.

“I am happy with this programme launched today. Meat is now expensive in butcheries, so we will follow the strategies required to ensure we breed our fish,” said a Glendale community member.

Another said, “We are happy with this launch event, it’s a major boost for us.”

RADCO Fisheries, which is working with the government under the fisheries programme, urged the community to exploit the fish project to boost food security.

“We came here to support the President, Cde ED Mnangagwa on his programme to distribute fish to the rural areas. In 2021, we supported the launch of the programme in Marondera and we supported the First Lady the same year by putting fish at Mwenje Dam. We came with 5000 breeders and in four months there should be 500 000 fish if people do not use nets,” said RADCO Fisheries national co-ordinator, Mr Doctor Tauzeni.

The government through the Department of Agritex and Parks urged the community to employ conservation methods for sustainability.

“We want the community to jealously guard the fish so they must fish using rods and not nets. Nets will finish all these fish, if each one comes with his net there will be nothing left, so you are the eyes of this dam,” said an Agritex officer.

“As Parks, we support environmental conservation and production hence, we are rallying behind this programme,” said a Zimparks officer.

Figures released by Agritex indicate that the country has an annual supply deficit of about 40 000 metric tonnes of fish, creating business opportunities for farmers to produce and supply fish.
