Bulawayo holds open market fair

Story by Grace Sibanda

GOVERNMENT and its developmental partners have created a platform for small to medium-scale traders and farmers to market their products.

This was evident at the market fair held in Bulawayo this Wednesday.

The open market fair held in Bulawayo this Wednesday at the yet to be opened Nkulumane Fruit and Vegetable Market brought farmers and informal traders together in a bid to create linkages for marketing their products.

Farmers who attended the market fair were excited at the prospect of having a formal business space that is expected to eliminate manipulation of prices by third parties.

“This market fair has helped us, especially for linkage purposes, it’s easier and faster than when we didn’t all know each other,” said a farmer.

Another said, “This market has made more people to know about our products and how they access them, opening this market will help us to trade in a clean and organised environment.”

Organiser of the fair, Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Association director, Michael Ndiweni is confident the Nkulumane Market Project will decongest the city while providing traders and the community with a safe place for trading.

“This market was organised for purposes of making traders as well as the market aware that the Nkulumane market is set to open at the end of May. This market will go a long way in creating linkages amongst farmers and traders and also decongest the city centre.”

The market fair comes as a build-up to the official opening of the Nkulumane Fruit and Vegetable Market, which feeds into the government’s deliberate efforts to formalise small to medium enterprises to ensure their participation in the national development agenda.
