AFCON enters knockout stage

THE Cote D’Ivoire versus Egypt encounter will headline the Africa Cup of Nations -AFCON round of 16 fixtures, with the Nigeria – Tunisia match also another pairing to look out for.

The conclusion of the group stages of the AFCON tournament this Thursday, was met with tears for the likes of holders Algeria, and excitement for the 16 teams that reached the knock-out stage.

It was also the day when all the pairings for the last 16 were confirmed with Cote D’Ivoire set to clash with record African champions, Egypt, while Nigeria play Tunisia.

However, action gets underway on Sunday with Burkina Faso clashing against the tournament’s surprise package, Gabon at 6pm.

The match will be followed by what promises to be a mouth-watering encounter between the high flying Super Eagles of Nigeria and 2004 champions Tunisia.

Nigeria are the only team with a 100 percent record from the group stages and are early favourites to lift the trophy.

Action continues on Monday with debutants, Gambia hoping to continue with their fairy-tale at the tournament when they meet Guinea, while Comoros have what many would consider as a mission impossible when they face hosts, Cameroon.

Senegal play Cape Verde, Morocco date Malawi, while Mali are up against Equatorial Guinea.

The peak of the fixtures will however pit the Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire and the Pharaohs of Egypt.

Cote D’Ivoire were impressive in their last group match against holders, Algeria, which they won 3-1.

On the other hand, the Egyptians will be no pushovers as they have regained their confidence after suffering a one-nil defeat to Nigeria in their first game at the tournament.
