AFCON : Drama expected in group E and F

By ZBC Reporter

IT is do or die for defending champions, Algeria who need to beat giants, Cote D’Ivoire to avoid an early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations – AFCON tournament in Cameroon.

The AFCON tournament has been a fairy-tale for the likes of Malawi and debutants, Gambia who have qualified for the knock-out stage of the showpiece, but one that four-time champions, Ghana would wish to quickly forget after bowing out after losing to minnows Comoros.

However, more is still to come, with defending champions Algeria also facing the prospect of an early exit if they fail to win against Cote D’Ivoire this evening.

The Riyad Mahrez captained side is bottom of group E with a single point after being upset by Equatorial Guinea and need nothing short of a victory against a star-studded Cote D’Ivoire side at 6.PM

Still in Group E, Equatorial Guinea play Sierra Leone, with a draw enough for the central Africans to progress.

However, it will not be a walk in the park as Sierra Leone fancy their own chances, as they could top the group if the match goes in their favour.

Action continues in Group F at 9pm, with already qualified Mali clashing against bottom-placed Mauritania.

Playing at the same time are Tunisia and already qualified Gambia, with a draw enough for the Tunisians to qualify as one of the best third placed teams.

With 3 points, Tunisia have a chance to top the group with a win if Mali fail to beat Mauritania.

Meanwhile, the people of Comoros and the SADC Region will be holding their breath as action in group E and F pans out.

Comoros still have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stage through the best third placed route.

The Indian Ocean Islanders finished third in Group C after their famous 3-2 victory over Ghana and will progress if Sierra Leone and Algeria fail to pick up points in Group E.
