Acting President Chiwenga mourns Rupiah Banda

The Acting President, General (Retd) Dr Constantino Chiwenga ha sent a message of condolences to President Hakainde Hichilema following the death of former Zambian President, Rupiah Banda.

“It was with great sorrow that I learnt of the passing on of the fourth President of the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency Rupiah Bwezani Banda. I take this opportunity to extend on behalf of the Government and People of the Republic of Zimbabwe and indeed on my own behalf our deepest condolences to the Government and People of the Republic of Zambia and the Banda family on the sad loss of a statesman and a father,” Acting President Chiwenga said in a statement.

“We in Zimbabwe will always remember him for his unflinching support for the removal of the illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe. During the official opening of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair in April 2009, he urged the world to support Zimbabwe. He said “every country in the world was bound to assist Zimbabwe and not isolate it…”. He also helped in the development of Zambia’s economy during the time he was the Vice President of your country.”

He noted that President Banda’s legacy has given him an exceptional place in history as a visionary statesman, who was present in so many pivotal moments of Zambia’s political history. With wisdom and foresight, he made major contributions to the transition of power in Zambia.

“The People of Zimbabwe join their brothers and sisters in Zambia in mourning this great son of Africa. May you take solace in the rich legacy that the dearly departed, H.E. Rupiah Bwezani Banda leaves behind,” he said.

Meanwhile, President Rupiah Banda who died on Friday, will be buried on the 18th of this month, with Zambia having declared seven days of mourning.
