Truck driver by trade, broadcaster by passion, DJ Gono

Story by Wellington Makonese

HARARE-IN the world of long-haul trucking, where the road is often lonely and the hours long, one Zimbabwean truck driver is changing the narrative one broadcast at a time.

Tawanda Manyemba, popularly known as DJ Gono or Mashofe, is making waves across Southern Africa as an unconventional broadcaster who entertains, educates, and informs his fellow drivers using social media.

Plying regional routes that stretch across Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Botswana, Namibia and beyond, DJ Gono has turned his truck cab into a mobile studio complete with music mixes, live commentary, road safety tips and community updates.

“I realised that our journeys are more than just moving goods. We are a community, and I wanted to bring some joy, some knowledge, and some updates to my fellow drivers,” said DJ Gono.

Far from being just a pastime, his broadcasts have become a vital link for many truckers on the road, offering real-time information, humour, and a sense of connection in an otherwise isolating profession.

From humorous roadside chants to serious discussions about safe driving, his content resonates deeply with a growing audience of drivers who rely on him not only for entertainment, but also for practical guidance.

“My goal is to make sure everyone gets to their destination safely, while also having a bit of fun along the way. We are all in this together,” he added.

DJ Gono’s unique approach highlights the evolving role of digital platforms in traditionally offline industries.

His work reflects the power of technology to transform everyday occupations and uplift communities in unexpected ways.

With a loyal following across the region, DJ Gono has become a symbol of positivity, resilience, and innovation proof that even in the cab of a truck, one can become a cultural icon.
