The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) requires more than 900 million dollars to construct a female open prison in Marondera, as the organisation aims to provide purpose-built prisons that promote rehabilitation of inmates.

The establishment of a female open prison is one of the priorities for the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) in 2020.

ZPCS Commissioner-General Retired Major General Paradzai Zimondi says they are targeting constructing prisons which are purpose-built to ensure effective rehabilitation of inmates.

“We have carried out surveys to come up with a bill of quantity and we need about 980 million dollars. Our experts have already completed their work,” Rtd Major General Zimondi said.

The ZPCS is looking at achieving best practices offered by correctional centres through transforming the current incarceration structures into friendly facilities for rehabilitation.

“We are now preparing people for their release and we want to provide an environment where they will learn life skills. At Chikurubi we have structures which are not purpose built. We have children sleeping on the floors. We need good facilities and structures to accommodate all their needs. We want them to do projects that will help them when they are out of prison,”

Zimbabwe has one open prison for male inmates at Connemara Open Prison in Kwekwe which accommodates about 120 inmates. The envisaged Marondera Female Open Prison will be the first for female inmates in the country. The population of female inmates across the country is less than 500.
