30th Session of Junior Parliament to open Saturday

THE 30th Session of the Children’s Parliament of Zimbabwe will be officially opened on Saturday the 18th of June, 2022 at the City Sports Centre in Harare.

This year’s session will run under the theme, “Eliminating Harmful Practices Affecting Children: Progress on Policy and Practice Since 2013”.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa will be the Guest of Honour.

This was revealed by Zimbabwe Youth Council Assistant Director Press and Public Relations, Tanzikwa Guranungo who also explained preparations leading to the day of the official proceedings.

“All elected and selected Child Parliamentarians across the country are expected to arrive in Harare on Tuesday the 13th of June and undergo an orientation workshop that will focus on Parliament procedures and how to debate in Parliament.”

“On Friday the 17th of June, the Child Parliamentarians and the Children Guard of Honour will undertake rehearsals as preparation for the official opening on Saturday the 18th,” he said.

Elections for the Child President will be held on Wednesday the 15th of June.

The Children’s Parliament consists of the National Assembly and the Senate, representing all the countries provinces and constituencies.

The Child Parliament was established in 1991 as an advocacy arm on children’s rights.

Every year through the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation and the Zimbabwe Youth Council take the opportunity to officially open the Child Parliament as a way of commemorating the Day of the African Child.

Besides Child Parliamentarians, more than 10 000 school children are expected to witness the Official Opening of the junior Parliament.

Cabinet Ministers, Parliamentarians and Diplomats are also expected to attend and answer issues which will be raised by the Child Parliamentarians during the debate session.
