2020 Victoria Falls marathon to be staged virtually in Dec

This year’s Victoria Falls marathon will be staged virtually on the 13th of December in line with the Covid-19 restrictions.

The Victoria Falls marathon has over the years grown to be one2 of the biggest athletics events held annually, with athletes coming from all corners of the world.

Efforts to host it on its usual dates were floored by the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, with organisers postponing it to the end of the year where it will be staged virtually.

A spokesperson for the organisers, Brant Williamson conceded that the development will hurt the Victoria Falls economy which benefits from such high-profile events.

“Well, it’s a huge hit for the community because the marathon used to fill up the whole town. Every single hotel was full, every BNB was full and there was no space available for anybody on that night if they haven’t pre-booked. Now with us not having the actual event there, people don’t have to come to Victoria Falls to run the marathon.”

Williamson, however, noted that efforts are underway to ensure that if all goes well next year’s event will be back with a bang.

“We are maintaining our database of athletes that have been running in the past so I don’t think it’s going to damage the event. The Covid-19 is merely a setback for this year whereas next year we will be back on track and the event will be rocking again.”

Participants will huff and puff in the full marathon, half marathon, 10.5km relay and the 7.5km fun run anytime on the 13th of December, with their times recorded and winners receiving their medals.
