What has been an eventful European Football season battered by the Covid-19 pandemic is set to come to an interesting climax with two continental finals on the cards this weekend.

The European football season reaches its climax this weekend starting with the Europa League Final featuring perennial campaigners Sevilla of Spain and Italy’s Inter Milan at the Rhein Energie Stadion in Cologne this Friday evening.

The weekend treat for football fans will come to an end with the big one of them all as rampaging German Champions Bayern Munich take on PSG of France in the UEFA Champions League Final slatted for Lisbon, Portugal on Sunday.

Under normal circumstances, the two finals should have taken place in May but these are not normal times given the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic around the globe.

All was well as of March this year but things took a nasty turn with football going on a forced sabbatical for several months before action resumed in empty stadia to curb the spread of the pandemic.

At one-point hope was sleeping away but thanks to technology and thorough preparations football returned but not without casualty to the format of the most prestigious continental club competition on the planet.

The home and away format in the knockout stage was scrapped and it was survival of the fittest with giants such as BARCELONA, REAL MADRID and JUVENTUS falling by the wayside.

It is also interesting that Zimbabwe somehow features prominently in the latter stages of the Champions League with France’s Lyon which is home to Zimbabwean international Tino Kadewere paying tribute to the Warriors Striker’s late brother Prince before and after their Champions League victory over Manchester City.

That they would eventually lose to Bayern Munich in the semis does not matter as they touched the hearts, soul and minds of Zimbabweans with their show of class on that fine night in Lisbon putting on t-shirts with Prince’s name in bold letters.
